This year's Glass and Weavers Show invites artists to explore the myriad facets of the Aurora Borealis. The Northern Lights have captivated humanity for millennia. Their ethereal beauty, a mesmerizing dance of light across the night sky, has inspired awe, wonder, and countless myths and legends.

A natural phenomenon displaying a vast spectrum of brilliant colors, the Aurora Borealis captivates the imagination and stimulates endless metaphors and creative expression. Cold, hard glass and warm, soft textiles complement each other, and the synergy of a wide range of colors in these two mediums will no doubt find expression in this exhibit.

The exhibit theme is a suggestion for piece creation, not a mandate. Let your creativity soar, drawing inspiration from the science, the spectacle, the personal, the cultural, and the mythical.

We invite artists to participate in our biennial juried exhibition focused on the theme Wondrous Light: Aurora Borealis. The exhibit will be held at the Downtown Art Center, Honolulu, Oʻahu, July 9-26. Wailoa Center in Hilo, Hawai'i Island will restage a portion of the exhibition following the closing on O'ahu,  September 5-25.

Eligible fiber, other media and glass pieces may be functional, sculptural, traditional or contemporary. Fiber and other media construction techniques should use interlacing in some fashion.

    Fiber Juror Suzie Liles

Suzie Liles is a lifelong Oregonian. For over 35 years she has taught weaving workshops and seminars for adults and children in the United States and Canada. She has been teaching at the Weavers’ School with Madelyn van der Hoogt for 30 years. Suzie has an MFA in Fibers from the University of Oregon. She is a member of the Handweavers Guild of America and has written many articles for Handwoven Magazine. She is the owner of Eugene Textile Center and co-owner of Glimakra USA with her daughter Sarah Rambousek. In her “free time” she runs tours to Sweden and Egypt. Ms. Wiles shares, "I am excited to be the juror of this show. I lived in Alaska where I saw the majestic Aurora Borealis many times. I expect to see some wonderful use of colors that would portray the imagination brought forth by the thought of this exciting phenomenon. It will be delightful to see how color, structure and fiber techniques are utilized in this exhibit."

    Glass Juror Hugh Jenkins

"My first exposure to glass came at the Foundry in Honolulu in 1969. That shop was a hui of UH ceramic students who were just exploring the material and understood heat. By 1972 I was invited to build a pilot program at Punahou School and my teaching career there lasted 26 years. I was not educated in the arts, but my interest in hand work started early through working with wood and doing lapidary. I love the hands-on control of hot glass furnaces and the machining of cold glass. Glass has a wide range of applications which include hot glass for blowing, hot sculpting and casting, 'warm' glass for slumping and fusing, and cold glass for cutting, sculpting and polishing. Glass interacts with light through color and optical properties and ranges from clear to transmitting and opaque. I think if it is chosen to make objects, it should answer, 'Why glass?'"

Class Clean Up & Studio Maintenance, Saturday, September 13, 9 AM -noon

Every session all classes together to clean up the classroom. This is a great opportunity for you to meet everyone and work together to keep our studio space in great working order! Many hands make light work. The more people that come the faster the work gets done.

We typically do not say the entire 3 hours. Chores include, but are not limited to, vacuuming the shelves, re-arranging the mold shelf, cleaning cabinets and waxing the kilns. Once we are done, we head out. It's a quick clean up that is fun and rewarding!

Starting at 9 AM and running until we finish, around Noon.
