Pen and Powder — Reverse Painting Workshop with Karen Thrasher

Karen Thrasher - A Little Koi - Gold and White Koi fish on a blue background with a black borderIn this class, we will create a 6" x 6", 2-layer piece and learn how to reverse paint on glass. We will learn how to mix traditional black enamel paint and create a contour drawing on the glass using a quill pen. After this has been fired, we will make paper stencils to further enhance our image by sifting various glass powders to "color in" our outline drawing. This will be fired again and eventually full fused to create a finished piece. There is a $35 supply fee (cash or card), paid to the instructor for Glass Fusion Collective at the beginning of the first class .

    Instructor Bio:

Image of Karen Thrasher wearing glasses and standing in front of her workMy journey started in a small town in Michigan. I loved nature, drawing and working with my hands. In school, I studied many different mediums including jewelry making, wood working, silk screening and I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit in ceramics. The cruel Michigan winters sent me to Hawai'i with my best friend. Since then, I have taught myself acrylic painting, airbrushing, silk painting, raku fired ceramics, offhand glass blowing, torchwork (both soft glass and Pyrex), as well as many fused glass techniques, including reverse painting and glass enamel painting.

    Location:

Temple Emanu-El, 2500 Pali Hwy., Honolulu, HI 96817
(Turn Left onto Jack Lane from Pali Hwy., and make your first left into the parking lot).

Note: Please do not bring outside scrap glass to class, we only use COE 96 glass and can not guarantee the glass you purchased elsewhere is the right coefficient for our firing schedule. COE 90 or non-fusing glass will contaminate our work space and cause problems if it gets into our scrap glass that is for sale.
