Back by Popular Demand, "Smoosh Glass" with Bud Spindt!

Learn how to compress multiple layers of fused glass between weighted kiln shelves, creating truly unique and surprising imagery in 3mm thin glass that can be slumped into functional plates and bowls, or just left flat as an art piece. This workshop is two sessions to allow for firing of your work between processes. You must attend both sessions for your project to be completed.

Includes:

As part of the class, you will have your choice of 1 lb of thick scrap glass.
Glass selection and stacking setup for firing, including assembly of reactive, dichroic, and iridized glass design options
Proper preparation of kiln shelves and kiln setup for “Compression” firing, including firing schedule
Cleanup of “Compressed” glass using a sandblaster to achieve a clean surface
Preparation for 2nd kiln firing to achieve fire polish or matte finish.
Use of the sandblaster & a third firing to slump your piece.
Slump mold options

What to Bring:

Glass: In addition to the provided scrap glass, bring other COE 96 scrap glass (including glass that's been fired already).

Clear and colored sheet glass
Stringers and noodles
Dichroic glass
Iridized glass
Colored Frits

Tools:

Glass Cutter
Running Pliers
Safety Goggles
Elmers glue (clear)

What to Wear:

Closed toe shoes
Long pants

Note: We only use COE 96 glass and can not guarantee the glass you purchased elsewhere is the right coefficient for our firing schedule. COE 90 or non-fusing glass will contaminate our work space and cause problems if it gets into our scrap glass that is for sale. If you are unsure if the glass is COE 96, do not bring it to this workshop.

Tropical Frit Impasto Workshop with Alysa Phiel (07/23/2026)

Impasto is a painting technique where paint is thickened with a medium and applied in layers to a canvas using a palette knife or brush. The impasto technique allows the artwork to have beautiful varied textures and dimensions.

Registration Fee:

$300 Members/$350 non-members

What to Expect:

We will be tweaking the traditional technique and adapting it for landscape designs on glass. We will be mixing powdered glass frit and a medium to create your own detailed main design background. You will learn not only to blend and “paint” with glass, but to also create your own patterned sheet glass for inclusion in all sorts of projects. No drawing skills required!

Instructor: Alysa Phiel

Alysa Phiel is a third-generation glass artist with almost 30 years of experience in glass, having been taught by her grandparents, long-time glass artists who owned their own studio for 12 years. Alysa then owned and operated Creations in Glass with her mother for 10 years. She also shared beginning through advanced classes with hundreds of students over eight years as the former Director of the Warm Shop at Sonoran Glass School in Tucson, Arizona.

In late 2017, Alysa opened her own studio, Wild Desert Glass in Tucson, where she continues to create custom projects in addition to offering instruction in fused glass, stained glass, and mosaics. Her creativity and range of knowledge make her a fantastic teacher for students looking to create any type of glass art. She constantly experiments with new techniques and materials and helps others challenge themselves and expand their own skills as artists.

Over the Edge Workshop with Alysa Phiel (07/25/2026)

You will be creating stunning curves within an on-edge design that will highlight rivers of colorful murrine patterns. We will discuss the overall technique, color and glass selection, and design options for including twists into your projects.

Learn the on-edge glass building technique, without geometric components and right-angle restrictions in classic on-edge design.
